Watch The People's Nepal Movie in High Definition

Product Description
The People's Nepal narrated by Peter Coyote, is the untold story of the 2006 revolution in this small Himalayan kingdom. It makes a strong appeal for peace where people simply want to live with equality, human rights, and freedom.
A haunting bell sets the mood for the sights, sounds, and music of a culture little known to the western world with 61 ethnic groups and 40 tribes of loving, non-violent people who live in harmony.
The story opens and closes with the annual parade of the Machindranath chariot being drawn through the streets. It is said that if the chariot overturns, the king will lose his power. On June 11, 2008, the chariot fell.
The film reveals the history, injustices, and attitudes that mobilized the people to demand the king's overthrow during a 19 day revolution. Seven speakers offer their own insights into the causes and events: a high school teacher, union activist, a male and female Maoist party member, an auditor for the Nepal Mountaineering Association, a representative of the Nepalese Trade Unions, and a human rights lawyer. Excellent archival photos show the history of kings who felt they were gods.
The camera then travels into villages exposing the violation of human rights imposed by a caste system and the extreme poverty where people are suffering in one of the least developed countries in the world.
Viewers witness very personal accounts of how the lower class has been suppressed with no education, no health facilities, no food, and no jobs. The government has given them nothing. Treated as subhuman, women want social and economic equality in a land where boys get books and girls cook.
In a heart-wrenching story, a young woman cries about being forced into marriage at 15, having her first child at 16, and returning to the fields six days later with no rest, no proper nutrition, and no education about what was happening in her body. Uterine prolapse is common in a society that expects women to bear children every year. If they cannot, they are disgraced and thrown out of their houses.
In another impassioned scene, a man sings that they are cutting our skin, spreading our blood, killing our sons and making our mothers cry. "They grind our rights like grinding sugar cane."
All of these abuses gave rise to the Nepali Civil War, a ten-year conflict between government forces and the Maoist rebels which began in 1996 with the aim of overthrowing the Nepalese monarchy and establishing the People's Republic of Nepal. Rebelling against the king's martial rule and imposed curfews, about 500,000 protesters took to the streets in April, 2006 in an attempt to oust the king.
Westerners had heard bits and pieces of the civil war and then only scant news of the April rioting because the king controlled all the media and communication. The People's Nepal contains incredible, on-the-spot video footage of what actually took place in the capital city of Kathmandu. Armed only with rocks, banners, and demanding peace
